600MP Camera Sensor really the next step for Samsung?


Taking pictures when having a good hair cut or posing like a model and recording videos while traveling, attending an event or recording latest dance moves, has become a part of our daily life. Samsung innovates camera sensors with the introduction of 48MP, 64MP, and crossed the 100MP mark by introducing a 108MP camera in the latest Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. They continue working on pixel binning technology. 


Recent sensor uses 2x2 for its 64MP sensors and 3x3 pixel binning for 108MP sensors. Mid-range and flagship smartphones were a part of these sensors, including Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha. 


Now corporate plans something big in the field of camera sensor segment. South Korean tech giant Samsung is now taking a huge step. The expectation to deliver more details than the human eye, they are working on a smartphone camera with a massive 600 MP sensor.


New Sensor Concept

Yongin Park, Head of Sensor Business Team said that our eyes perceive around 500Mp resolution in comparison to DSLR and smartphone which is just 40Mp and 12Mp eyes but the corporate still have to go on a long way to be able to match a human eye perception capabilities. 

Today's cameras can take pictures between 450 and 750 nanometers (nm) that can be visible to the human eyes. Now Samsung is working on camera sensors with 600 Megapixels to beat the human.

Combining soo many pixels as possible in a single sensor results in a massive image sensor isn’t a good solution because it would take the entire space on the device. This results in shrunk the sensors in a compact size and compact sensors provide dull or fuzzy picture quality. 

Million of pixels fitting in a smartphone, shrink the sensors that can be compact as possible. Samsung has been navigating this balance in our image sensors.

Application of 600MP Camera Sensor

The application has just been limited in the smartphone field because they working on endless possibilities in pixel technology.
  1. Sensors for ultraviolet (UV) rays perception used to diagnose skin cancers by capturing images of healthy and unhealthy cells in different colors. Infrared sensors are used for agriculture industries for efficient quality control.
  2. Samsung confirms that it is looking into other types of sensors that can register smells or tastes.
  3. Use it in different applications like Drones, Smart Autonomous Vehicles and Internet of Things (IoT).






Cutting-Edge Pixel Technologies

Cutting-edge specs like slim designs, pixels inevitably and high screen-to-body ratios have to shrink so that millions of pixels fit in today’s smartphones so that sensors can be as compact as possible. 
This megapixel count often treated as a gold standard for image quality but it’s not as simple as that. Solution to this problem is their ‘Nonacell technology’ for the latest 108Mp image sensor (ISOCELL Bright HM1), have an ability to increase the amount of light absorption. 
Technological limitations are just another challenge to our engineers, that motivates their innovation.
Samsung is well known for pushing smartphone camera technology boundaries. In 2019, Samsung was the first to introduce image sensors based on 0.7μm pixels, and also they announced the first 64 Megapixel camera sensor which used the 2×2 pixel binning sensors, and after six months, we brought 108Mp sensors to the market with better light absorption. It just took six months to jump in 108MP Sensors and a lot more expected to introduce a 600MP sensor in the market soon.




Limitation

The biggest argument against high megapixel cameras is the file size. Bigger the image files require a huge amount of storage and processing power, which consumes a lot of power as well as memory too. 
A high megapixel sensor doesn’t mean that is produce a high megapixel image. Samsung uses pixel binning technique to form a large pixel sensor. For example, if you are using a 48MP camera sensor then it can produce only 12MP image. Like 600MP sensor produces a 150MP picture with 4 in 1 pixel binning or 16MP output image with 36 in 1 binning technique.
